This Week in Band: 10/16/23

Good Evening, Rams,

We have another epically busy week on our hands! Here is what this week’s TWIB will be covering:

  • Chair Orders & Concert Band Rehearsals
  • the Apopka Away Game food info and itinerary
  • The Dede Schaffner Seminole County Marching Band Festival food info, ticket info, and itinerary
  • the Florida Bandmasters Association Marching MPA date, time, and preliminary itinerary

Chair Orders & Concert Band Rehearsals

Initial chair orders will be posted tomorrow in class. Chair orders are a way to establish a hierarchy of skill within a performing ensemble because certain parts require a higher level of skill than other parts. These chair orders are based on the scores earned through the performance of four assignments from the first quarter. Students can improve their chair order by how they perform on the next set of assignments in the 2nd quarter.

As this marching season winds down, bands will transition to after-school concert band rehearsals. Symphonic Band students (period 2) will rehearse on Tuesdays from 2:45–4 PM, and Wind Ensemble students (Period 1) will rehearse on Thursdays from 2:45-4 PM. All percussion students will be assigned to one of these groups to fulfill the percussion needs of the concert band literature. Their assignments will be determined in the coming weeks. The first week of concert band rehearsals is the week of November 6.

Apopka Game

The Apopka HS Band offers a pre-order concessions/meal deal for visiting band students, much like we provide our visiting bands. They offer a meal of burger, cheeseburger, or hot dog w/ chips and a drink for $6. Students will need to complete their order at the link below and get $6 to me by Thursday: Apopka Meal Pre-Orders

Dede Schaffner Seminole County Marching Band Festival

This Saturday, October 21, Lake Mary HS will host the Dede Schaffner Seminole Country Marching Band Festival. This event will feature all of the marching bands from SCPS performing their halftime shows in an exhibition, partly to prepare for the Marching MPA on October 28. The event will begin with the amassed bands of all the high schools performing the Start-Spangled Banner.

There are several essential points of interest for this event:

  • This is a ticketed event. Students can pre-purchase tickets directly from Mr. Langston for $10 a ticket. Cash or check (made out to the Lake Mary Band Boosters) will be accepted in an envelope labeled with the student’s first & last name, what the money is for, and the amount enclosed.
  • Families can also purchase tickets at the gate for the same amount.
  • Students can pre-order a meal to eat in between the rehearsal and the performance here: Marching Festival Meal Pre-order
    • If they have ordered in class, they do not need to do it again.
    • I will need the money for this meal turned in to me by Thursday.
    • It needs to be turned in in an envelope labeled with the student’s first & last name, what the money is for, and the amount enclosed.
  • The band will have a morning rehearsal for this event from 8 AM to 10 AM on the north practice field.

FBA Marching MPA

This year’s Marching Band Music Performance Assessment will be on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at Lake Brantley HS. Music Performance Assessments are the musical world’s version of “standardized testing .” Ensemble performances are rated based on a set of well-established standards meant to compliment the positive aspects of performance, critique essential aspects of the performance, and then provide direction on improving upon those points of critique. This performance is critical, and attending and performing is worth a large grade for the 2nd quarter.

Lake Mary’s performance time will be at 6:35 PM. Tickets for this event can be ordered via Teach Tix at the following link:

Tickets will only be sold digitally with digital payment, not with cash. The QR code to purchase tickets will be available on-site at Lake Brantley on the event day.
